1. What should be in the package when I receive it?
Whether you bought the retail version or the OEM version, you should have:

2. Should I test my Flood Detective before I install it?
All of our Flood Detective alarms are tested before they leave the factory, but feel free to test your Flood Detective before installing it.

3. How do I test my Flood Detective?

  1. Install a battery into the alarm unit or apply power to the unit using the AC adapter
  2. Plug the sensor cable into the jack on the left (as you're looking at the FD logo)
  3. Touch the sensor's metal traces with a damp cloth or your finger.

4. My Flood Detective doesn't make a sound when the sensor is wet. Now what?
Try the Flood Detective with a fresh battery. If the unit still doesn't sound when the sensor is wet, please return it and we'll send you another Flood Detective.

5. How do I mount my Flood Detective to a tile or metal surface?
For mounting on tile or metal surfaces, we recommend using thick double-sided adhesive available in most hardware or auto supply shops. 3M makes a wide variety of adhesive mounting pads that will allow you to mount the alarm unit on almost any surface. A good choice for this would be 3M Double-Coated Urethane Foam Tape 4004, available at most hardware or auto supply stores.

6. Can I install the Flood Detective upside-down?
You can place the Flood Detective alarm unit in any orientation: under a shelf or on top of a counter are popular mounting choices.

7. How do I change the battery?
Remove the Flood Detective front by squeezing the sides and pulling it from the base. The battery can then be removed. NOTE: Be sure to orient that battery properly; the larger battery terminal goes on the right-hand side as you're looking at the inside of the front.

8. How often should I change the battery?
Your Flood Detective will run up to three years on a normal 9 volt battery. Of course, if the alarm has been sounded frequently or for extended periods of time, the battery life will be reduced. We recommend you replace the battery every year, just as you should with your smoke alarms.

9. Will the Flood Detective run without a battery?
Yes, if the AC adapter is plugged into a live 110 volt outlet.

10. What are the three connections on the top?
Here is an explanation of the connections:

11. Help! The alarm won't shut off!
Unplug the sensor. Dry it thoroughly and plug it in again. If the alarm still sounds, return the unit and sensor to us and we'll replace them at no charge.

12. Jeepers! How loud IS that Flood Detective alarm?
The alarm is rated at 92 decibels on the "A" weighted scale.

13. Is there any way to make the alarm a little quieter?
If you install the alarm in a location which does not require a loud alarm, you may muffle the sound by placing a piece of masking tape or duct tape over the speaker holes in the case. Test the volume by touching the sensor with your finger to make sure the alarm will still be loud enough to alert you to a water leak.

14. My Flood Detective unit chirps every thirty seconds. What's wrong?
The battery is low and should be replaced with a new one.

15. The red light flashes every so often. What's that mean?
A flashing red light means the unit is operating normally.

16. The green light is on continuously. What's that mean?
A solid green light means the unit is powered by AC and the battery has sufficient charge for reliable backup operation.

17. Does the AC adapter charge the battery?
No. The AC adapter keeps the battery from being depleted in an alarm condition.

18. What accessories can I buy for my Flood Detective?
See our website at www.LeakAlarm.com for our full line of accessories, auxiliary sensors, and extra parts as they become available. We are constantly developing new and innovative accessories to enhance your use of our Flood Detective products.
